How UPI fraud money is traced, and why your account was frozen
The mechanics behind an account freeze — and why being in the payment trail is not the same as being an accused.

Every week this office speaks to someone whose account has been frozen and who has no idea why. They have not been named in an FIR, nobody has called them, and the bank will only say the account has been blocked on the instructions of a law enforcement agency. Understanding how the money was traced explains both why it happened and how it gets fixed.
How a complaint becomes a freeze
The sequence is largely automated at the front end.
- A victim reports an unauthorised transaction on the 1930 helpline or at cybercrime.gov.in. The complaint enters the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System.
- The system pushes a ticket to the victim's bank and to the beneficiary bank — the account the money went to.
- The beneficiary bank places a hold. If the money has already moved on, the next bank in the chain is notified, and so on.
- A police unit somewhere then issues a formal communication under Section 106 BNSS (formerly Section 102 CrPC), and the hold becomes a freeze that stays until somebody applies for release.
The important feature is step three. The hold follows the money down the chain, and it does not stop to ask whether each account holder along the way did anything wrong.
Why innocent accounts get caught
You sold something
A customer paid you for goods or services with money he had obtained by fraud. The transaction was, from your side, entirely ordinary. Your account is nonetheless in the trail.
You trade crypto on P2P
This is the single largest category of innocent freezes. In a P2P trade you release cryptocurrency against a rupee payment from a counterparty you did not choose and cannot vet. If that rupee payment came from fraud proceeds, your bank account is the next hop.
You are several hops down
Money that passes through four accounts can result in freezes on all four. Distance from the original fraud does not, by itself, prevent a hold.
What actually gets it released
Three arguments do most of the work.
Proportionality
Where ₹30,000 is disputed and ₹7 lakh is frozen, the freeze is disproportionate to the alleged wrong. Courts have consistently accepted that the hold should be confined to the disputed amount, and proportionate release of the undisputed balance is a standard and frequently successful prayer.
Bona fide consideration
You supplied real value in a real transaction. This is proved with documents, not assertions: invoices, GST returns, delivery proof, platform trade IDs, escrow confirmations, chat records with the payer. Traders who kept records are in a strong position. Those who kept none are not, which is the argument for keeping them from the outset.
Ordinary account use
Six to twelve months of statements showing salary credits, EMIs, utility payments and normal household activity establish that this is a real person's real account, not a rented mule account. Investigating officers respond to this pattern.
The route
First, a written representation to the police unit named in the freeze reference, enclosing the documents. In genuine third-party cases a reasonable investigating officer will release or reduce the hold without court intervention, and this is much the fastest route.
Where that does not work, an application before the Magistrate having jurisdiction. Section 106 BNSS requires the seizure to be reported to the Magistrate, which gives the court authority to direct release, commonly on an undertaking to maintain a balance equal to the disputed amount.
Where several complaints across states are linked to one account, or the freeze has continued unreasonably without progress in the investigation, a petition before the Punjab & Haryana High Court is the appropriate remedy.
Two things not to do
Do not open a new account and quietly move your business through it. Where the trail is being monitored, that pattern reads as concealment and frequently results in the new account being frozen too.
Do not pay the complainant privately to make it go away. Without the police record being corrected and the freeze formally lifted, you will have paid and still have a blocked account.
