Online job scams — often disguised as "part-time task-based earning" opportunities — have become a widespread and specifically targeted form of cyber fraud in Gurgaon, affecting students, homemakers, and job seekers looking for flexible income. The pattern has become familiar enough that recognising it early, and knowing the correct complaint process, makes a real difference.
How the Scam Typically Unfolds
Victims are contacted via WhatsApp or Telegram, often after applying to a legitimate-looking job posting, and are told about a "task-based" role — liking videos, rating products, or completing simple app tasks for a small initial payment to build trust. Once engaged, victims are moved into a "VIP" or "premium" task tier that requires depositing money to unlock higher-paying tasks, with the promise of a larger withdrawal once a "target" is completed. The deposits escalate, and withdrawal is ultimately blocked, often with a demand for further payment to "unlock" the account.
The Legal Character of the Offence
This conduct constitutes cheating and, depending on how the fake employer or platform is impersonated, cheating by personation under Section 66D of the IT Act — the same provision that applies to fake trading platforms and other online impersonation frauds, explained in our post on Section 66C vs 66D of the IT Act.
Step 1: Stop Engaging and Preserve Evidence
Once it's clear the "job" is fraudulent, stop making any further deposits immediately — the promise of eventually unlocking withdrawal by paying more is itself part of the fraud. Before anything else, preserve:
- The original job posting or message that initiated contact
- Full chat history on WhatsApp/Telegram, including the recruiter's number and any claimed company name
- Screenshots of the app or platform showing the "task" interface and any balance/earnings shown
- All transaction records — UPI IDs, bank account numbers, or screenshots of each payment made
Step 2: File on cybercrime.gov.in and Call 1930
File the complaint under the financial fraud category on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, following the process detailed in how to file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, and call the 1930 helpline without delay to request a freeze on the receiving account. As with most financial cyber fraud, speed genuinely affects recovery odds — see our broader explanation in legal steps for digital arrest scam victims, since the freeze mechanism works the same way here.
Step 3: Report the Fake Job Posting Platform Too
If the initial contact came through a legitimate job portal or social media platform being misused to advertise the scam, report the specific listing or profile to that platform as well — this doesn't replace the cyber complaint, but it helps prevent the same fraudulent account from targeting others while your case is investigated.
What Recovery Realistically Looks Like
Because these scams often involve relatively smaller amounts per victim but target thousands of people, the receiving accounts tend to see large aggregate deposits, which sometimes makes them easier for cyber cells to flag and freeze quickly if enough victims report promptly. Recovery through the same account-freeze and release mechanism we describe in our frozen account series, starting with how much time it takes to unfreeze a bank account, is genuinely possible where the complaint is filed early.
A Note on Recruitment Fraud vs Genuine Gig Work
Not every task-based or gig platform is fraudulent — the distinguishing red flag is almost always a requirement to deposit your own money before you can withdraw earnings. Legitimate gig and freelance platforms never require the worker to pay to unlock payment for work already completed.
