If you have lost money to an online scam, speed and evidence both matter. Report quickly, but also protect the proof that will let the police and the courts trace what happened.
First, report fast
Call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 and file a complaint on the national cyber crime reporting portal as soon as possible, so the receiving bank can be alerted. Then approach the cyber crime police station with your documents.
What to preserve
- Transaction records: bank statements, UPI transaction IDs, reference numbers, dates and amounts.
- Communications: chats, emails, call logs and voice notes, kept on the original device and, if possible, backed up.
- Profiles and links: screenshots of profiles, websites and advertisements, with the full URL and the date and time visible.
- Payment details: account numbers, UPI IDs, wallet details and phone numbers you paid or contacted.
- Your own steps: a short written timeline of what happened, in order.
What not to do
- Do not delete chats or uninstall apps.
- Do not confront the fraudster or pay "recovery" fees to anyone who promises to get your money back.
- Do not try to hack or retaliate. That creates liability for you.
Why the format matters
Electronic evidence is only as strong as its handling. A certificate under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, and an unbroken record of how the material was collected, make a real difference at trial. Our cyber crime lawyers in Gurgaon help prepare complaints so key facts are not missed.
Tracing the trail
Where the other side's identity or the money trail needs lawful open-source and record-based tracing, our private detective team in Gurugram can support the complaint, working with the evidence rather than around it.
