Sextortion follows a predictable script: a video call, a recording made without consent, and then a demand for money backed by a threat to send the footage to your contacts. It's built entirely on panic, and the first hour after the threat lands matters more than almost anything that follows.

Do not pay

Paying doesn't end it. In the overwhelming majority of cases, one payment is followed by a second, larger demand, because paying confirms the threat works. The single most important step is to stop responding to the extortion itself and move immediately to reporting and evidence preservation instead.

What to do right away

  • Do not delete the chat, call log, or any message — screenshot everything, including the number or profile used to contact you
  • Block the contact only after you've preserved the evidence, not before
  • Report immediately on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or the 1930 helpline, which is built specifically for financial fraud and extortion
  • If a payment has already been made, report it within the same window — banks and payment gateways can sometimes freeze funds if flagged fast enough

Why speed matters

Numbers used in these scams are typically abandoned quickly, and any request to trace the call, the SIM, or the payment trail depends on records that degrade over time. A complaint filed the same day gives an investigator something to actually act on; one filed a week later is often working with much less.

If the threat has already been carried out

Non-consensual sharing of private images and videos is a criminal offence on its own, distinct from the extortion demand, and content already circulated can in some cases be pursued for takedown through the platform and through law enforcement in parallel.

Related situations

Sextortion often overlaps with other categories of online fraud — see the guide on the broader digital arrest scam for a related script that uses fear rather than shame, and on what happens if a payment gets flagged and your own account ends up frozen as a result.

If you're dealing with this in Gurgaon, read more on the cyber crime lawyer page — a same-day complaint filed correctly is usually the difference between containing this and having it escalate.
