Gurugram has no shortage of agencies advertising investigation services. Because there is no licensing regime to rely on, you have to do the screening yourself. These eight questions will help.
1. How exactly will you get the information?
You want specifics: public records, field verification, interviews, open-source research. Vague answers or "we have sources" are a warning sign.
2. Will any of it involve phone records or accounts?
If yes, stop. Unauthorised access to call records, bank data or online accounts is unlawful and can pull you in as well. Read our explainer on whether hiring a private detective is legal in India.
3. What will the report look like?
A usable report names sources, dates and methods, and separates verified facts from unverified information. A one-page summary with no basis is not enough if you plan to use it in a dispute.
4. Can the findings be used in court?
Ask who will prove the material and how. Electronic evidence in particular needs proper handling and the certificate required under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023.
5. Is there a written engagement letter?
It should state the objective, scope, methods, timeline, deliverables and fee. Avoid open-ended arrangements with no defined end.
6. How is confidentiality handled?
Who sees your information, how is it stored, and will your identity be disclosed to the subject? A professional team will answer clearly.
7. What happens if the facts support legal action?
An investigation backed by lawyers can move straight into a notice, complaint or petition. This is the main advantage of using a law-led private detective team in Gurugram.
8. What will you refuse to do?
A good investigator will tell you where the limits are. If someone promises to find out anything about anyone, be careful.
If you would like to talk through your situation before engaging anyone, a confidential consultation with Rajat Kadyan and Associates is a good starting point.
