The money moves in seconds. Getting any of it back takes a lot longer, and the biggest factor in whether you succeed is how fast you act in the first few hours.
The golden window: the first 24 hours
Under the RBI's framework and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, banks are required to freeze funds that are traced to a fraudulent transaction if the complaint is lodged quickly enough that the money hasn't already been withdrawn or layered across multiple accounts. Two channels matter most:
- Call 1930, the national cybercrime helpline, immediately. Report the transaction ID, amount, and receiving UPI ID or account number. This is the fastest way to trigger a freeze request to the beneficiary bank.
- File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in the same day, which generates a formal acknowledgment and complaint number you will need for everything that follows, including your bank's dispute process.
Then file at the local level
Alongside the national portal, an FIR or complaint at the Gurgaon Cyber Cell strengthens your position, particularly if the amount is significant or the fraud involved a wider scam network rather than a single UPI mistake. For the general process of getting a complaint registered, see our guide on filing a cyber crime complaint in Gurgaon.
If your account itself gets frozen instead
Sometimes the twist is the other way around — your own account is frozen because it received funds connected to someone else's fraud complaint, even though you did nothing wrong. That is a different problem with its own process, covered in our posts on getting a frozen account released and our account unfreeze practice page.
Why recovery isn't guaranteed even when you act fast
Fraud rings typically move money through a chain of mule accounts within minutes, often converting it to crypto or withdrawing cash before a freeze request reaches the last bank in the chain. Recovery rates are highest when the receiving account still holds a balance at the time of the freeze request — which is exactly why the first hour matters more than the first week.
What a lawyer actually adds at this stage
Beyond the initial complaint, a lawyer helps when the bank is slow to act on a legitimate freeze request, when the case needs to be escalated to the Banking Ombudsman, or when the fraud is large enough or organised enough to warrant a more detailed FIR naming Sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and criminal conspiracy, not just the cyber cell's standard process. If the scam involved a fake investment platform, a fraudulent loan app, or impersonation of a bank official, these often connect to wider cheating and fraud cases that benefit from being pursued as such from the start.
If a large amount has already been lost
For higher-value frauds, especially those resembling investment or "digital arrest" scams, see our detailed breakdown of how the digital arrest scam works and what to do about it, and our overview of the five cybercrime patterns behind most complaints in India.
If you've lost money to a UPI or online payment fraud in Gurgaon, the priority is speed: call 1930, file on the portal, and get a lawyer involved the same day if the amount is significant or the bank isn't moving fast enough on its own.
