Crypto scams have overtaken several older categories of cyber fraud in Gurgaon, usually starting the same way — a social media ad, a WhatsApp group promising guaranteed returns, or a "relationship" built over weeks before the investment pitch arrives. By the time the platform stops letting you withdraw, the money has often already moved through several wallets. Recovery is harder here than in ordinary bank fraud, but not impossible.
Why crypto fraud is different from a UPI scam
A bank transfer can sometimes be frozen mid-transit if reported fast enough. A crypto transaction, once confirmed on-chain, cannot be reversed — the only real leverage is identifying and freezing the exchange account or wallet the funds landed in before they're converted and withdrawn as cash. That makes the complaint's speed and specificity more important than in almost any other fraud category.
What to gather before you file
- Wallet addresses and transaction hashes for every transfer you made
- The name of the platform or app, screenshots of the promised returns, and any KYC or onboarding documents you were asked to submit
- All communication with the person or group that solicited the investment
Filing the complaint
Report on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or through the 1930 helpline, specifying that the fraud involved cryptocurrency so it's routed correctly. Where the destination wallet sits on a registered Indian exchange, a request can be made to freeze the linked account while the investigation identifies the account holder — this is the step that actually has a realistic chance of recovering something.
Where these schemes usually lead
Organised crypto scams often run as part of a larger investment fraud operation, sometimes overlapping with what would separately qualify as an EOW matter once multiple victims and larger sums are involved, or drawing in money laundering proceedings if the Enforcement Directorate takes an interest in the platform itself.
Set realistic expectations
Full recovery isn't guaranteed in most crypto fraud cases, and anyone promising it upfront should be treated with suspicion. What a properly filed, well-evidenced complaint does is give an investigator an actual chance — which is considerably better than the alternative of doing nothing.
