Advocate Rajat Kadyan & Associates · Gurugram

Matrimonial and dating platforms are a favourite hunting ground for fraudsters. A convincing profile, a quick emotional bond and then a request for money: this pattern is common, and Gurugram's professionals and NRIs are frequent targets.

Common patterns

  • A profile claiming to be abroad or in a high-income job, who cannot meet or do a live video call.
  • Requests for money for a customs fee, a medical emergency, a visa problem or an "investment opportunity".
  • A push to move the conversation off the platform quickly.
  • Photos that appear elsewhere online, or details that change between conversations.
  • Requests for intimate photos or videos, followed by threats. This is sextortion.

Protect yourself

  • Insist on live video calls early, and meet in a public place with family aware.
  • Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you have not met.
  • Do not share intimate images or sensitive identity documents.
  • Verify the claims before the relationship deepens. Our guide to pre-marriage verification in Gurugram lists the lawful checks.

If you have been targeted

Stop sending money, preserve every chat and payment record, and report quickly to the cyber crime helpline 1930 and the cyber crime police station. Our post on preserving digital evidence explains what to save. For NRI victims, see NRI cyber fraud and cheating lawyer.

Verification before commitment

When a match looks promising, independent verification of identity, marital status and background is the best protection. Our private detective team in Gurugram carries out these checks lawfully and discreetly, with legal advice if something does not add up.
